The basics

What is an MCP server?

An MCP server is the connection through which an AI works with your systems: it tells the AI which tools and data exist, and carries out what it is allowed to do on behalf of a person.

In short

Three terms are all you need.

MCP

The Model Context Protocol is an open standard through which AI assistants access tools and data. Anthropic published it at the end of 2024; today many AI applications support it, including Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot.

MCP client

The AI application you work in – such as Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot. It connects to one or more MCP servers.

MCP server

The service on the other side. It offers the AI tools (to do something), resources (to read something) and prompts (for recurring tasks).

Think of MCP as a standard socket for AI: a system builds the connection once, and every AI that speaks MCP can use it.

How it works

How a request runs through an MCP server.

  1. You ask.

For example: “Which deals need my attention this week?”

  2. The AI checks what is available.

The MCP server lists its tools with a short description, such as “search deals” or “create card”.

  3. The AI calls a tool.

With your sign-in: it acts on your behalf, not with a master key.

  4. The server checks and executes.

It checks your permissions, reads or writes in the system and records the action in the log.

  5. The AI answers.

With the result from your real data – and the next step, if you want it.

Without and with MCP

Copy and paste was yesterday.

Without MCP

  • Data is copied into the chat by hand.
  • Every AI needs its own integration.
  • Nobody knows what the AI has seen.

With MCP

  • The AI fetches what it needs – within your permissions.
  • One connection for every AI assistant that speaks MCP.
  • Every action is logged.

In our context

What we connect the MCP server in primover for.

primover is both: an MCP server that connects your AI to your CRM, and a set of its own products for sales and marketing, all of them MCP-ready. That way your AI reaches what it needs for your work – CRM, goals, organisation and knowledge – and nothing beyond that.
